BUSY week! DIY filming, Daily Basics Post, Rejuvenation Fairy Tale and more!

Wow is all I have to say!  So many amazing things have happened in just one week. I wrote fun guest blog posts for Rejuvenation and The Daily Basics. Then I headed to Boston to film more for the DIY online salvage series -- so happy to see the projects coming together! Then we came home (dragging my friend Shannon with me) and threw on some different clothes and headed to the Flying Pig for a fun event -- Lamp Decoupage!  Next up: More filming and then off to Phoenix to Sweet Salvage for an event on April 19th!  Thanks for following along. Here is my week recap in pictures!
My best, Joanne

Flying Pig Bookstore -- Decoupage Lamps Event was a huge success.  A big thank you to Kelly and Josie.

The lamps--the before stage. Josie did a lovely write up about the event for Publishers Weekly. Thanks Josie!

I loved all the creative ways everyone decoupaged their lamps. Here is one in the making. I hope they send me pictures of what the lamps look like in their homes.

My amazing college intern, Nora. Without her, the event at the Flying Pig would not have happened!

Don't want you to think I'm just hanging out while everyone is working during filming for DIY NETWORK.  I was drilling, using the jigsaw, painting -- all sorts of fun DIY--that's my favorite part. Wait till you see what I'm doing with this!

I don't know what I would've done if I didn't fly my BFF, the talented and beautiful, Shannon Quimby, to assist me. She really worked hard! Five full days. Wish I could have her back the following week for the next four rooms--hint, hint, nudge, nudge.

Too tired to go out. Dinner at the hotel on a towel -- three nights in a row from the same place :)
Love those containers -- I reuse them for my crafts.

The ladies of DIY filming--Missy, Meghan, me, Angela, Mo, Shannon and Patty!
(Sorry gentleman, we'll get you in the next picture.)

You've got to check out my FAIRY TALE post on Rejuvenation. Turning an old dresser into a thing of beauty!

My Mantel Story on The Daily Basics.
I love mantels--they're little stages for creativity!

Cozy Vermont Cabin Ideabook, Featured Today on Houzz

As a monthly contributor to HOUZZ.com, it was my honor and pleasure to interview the architect, builder and homeowner of this gorgeous Vermont cabin. I love the fact that everything was carried over a pedestrian bridge. Check out the article which is today's FEATURED IDEABOOK on Houzz.com. Filled with charm and salvaged finds -- it was right up my alley! All the amazing photos are by Susan Teare.

Do It Yourself Kids' Headboards

Excited to share with you the kids' room headboards I made for DIY NETWORK! I used all recycled and salvage material. My daughter, Gabrielle, made the Duct Tape Headboard.  She is a salvage crafter in the making.  For Step by Step for each of them just click HERE to DIY NETWORK.  (Oh and on the same page is a coffee table with old soda crates and mudroom storage dresser--I made those too :)) All final photos are taken by the one and only Susan Teare!

Book Shelves, Repurposed, Reclaimed and Antique

I'm in the middle of a home remodel project for DIY NETWORK (can't wait to tell you more about it) and I need to think about book shelves.  So as per usual, I get up early, make a cup of coffee and peruse the Internet. Images of recycled wood shelves with piping and old crates dance in my head. I already have an idea of what my design is going to look like but it's really fun to see how creative people can get with do-it-yourself bookshelf projects, plus I like to see what retail furniture companies are selling with reclaimed materials (keep up the good work - I hope more will follow in your footsteps). And of course, I always have to check out the vintage and antique pieces, sometimes they don't fit in the project's budget but I love to know the history and get a feel for the designs, so I can understand the era I'm working with. Here are just a few of my early morning finds...
My Best, Joanne
Anthropologie has lots of bookcases and shelving made from reclaimed wood and metal.

Here is an antique piece from the 1880's. I love to think about what life must have been like in this home. I'm sure sitting in my workout pants, hair in a bun, downing coffee like it will be my last cup would not be an option in those days :)

Not totally done, but I had to show it to you because this is the closest to my idea for the room I'm working on.  I love their comments along the way as well. This is on, Is This a House Yet? blog. Very fun.

Love the color and I'll admit, the easy of this bookshelf system on Remodeloholic.  Sigh. But, alas, not the style of the house I'm working on now. Someday...

The colors are so cool. This reclaimed wood sideboard bookshelf will look great in my Caribbean home -- okay, I don't have a Caribbean home, but everyone says a positive attitude is the first step.

Look at this piece! Need I say more. Restoration Hardware does it again.

Clever, Clever, Clever! I love to see designers make these great unusual pieces. Kudos to you, Campanas! Check out the blog post on Inhabitat.

Plumber's metal piping and some boards and voila -- instant bookshelves. This Apartment Therapy post about a house in New York shows all sorts of great salvage ideas (including the table in this picture).

Shopping at Barge Canal Market, One Stop on Your Pine Street Tour

The Barge Canal Market is located on one of my favorite streets in Burlington, Vermont--Pine Street. Filled with antique shops, second hand shops, recycle centers and more -- include New World Tortilla -- yummy, this street (and the ones around it) are brimming with finds. The Barge Canal Market on Pine Street is now owned by Jeremy and his wife Adele (yes -- now everyone can pronounce her name). They have totally cleaned it up and organized the space and brought in some cool stuff. I love the retro and vintage finds, including the clothing section and the mismatched metal chairs -- there is something for everyone in there. So check it out and say hi to them for me.  Hard working couple -- very nice!

Here is a list of the places I check out on and around Pine Street--you can make a day of it!

The Barge Canal Market
Vintage Inspired Antiques
Rebuild Center
Restore Center
Conant Metal and Light
The Lamp Shop
Battery Street Jeans (second hand shop)
The second hand shop at the Church (Tuesdays and Thursdays and some Saturdays)
Lake Champlain Chocolates (seconds :))
New World Tortilla
Burlington Furniture Company
Great Harvest Bread (get your free slice)
and a few other hot spots!

Have fun--let me know if you find anything cool.
My Best, Joanne
Check out the improved Barge Canal Market on Pine Street, Burlington, Vermont.

Don't you love the new look.  You can walk around.  Books, frames, retro dining sets, club chairs, dishes...

I love chairs. The metal ones on the floor and the ones up top -- the white mod looking ones -- how cool would they be with a rustic wood table!

I love vintage clothing -- I could go crazy here -- are those cowboy boots in the background? Missed that!

My First Major Video Experience

Really excited to share with you that I'm working with DIY NETWORK on some online videos about salvage design. This week is my first week of filming and the film crew is so nice, making me feel at ease (of course, I'm still nervous and worried that I'm going to totally screw up...)  Looking forward to sharing all these great salvage design ideas I have for some of the rooms in this old house (1794--wow) in Boston. Until then, keep your fingers crossed for me :)  Rolling...

I SPY...Virtual Shopping for Recycled and Vintage Goods

I spend a lot of time checking out my local salvage and second hand shops, and when I'm traveling, I find more, but when I can't get out of the house, I'm sure to see what is out there via the Internet. I love playing the I SPY game looking for cool things.  Here are a few of my wish list items...just in case you are wondering :)  The web is truly a cornucopia  of recycled and salvaged products waiting to be discovered--so have fun and search away.
My Best, Joanne

I know I can't drag this home from London but I have always been in love with vintage Chesterfield Sofas. Don't ask me why -- maybe an old movie I saw in my youth?  Ebay is a great place to browse for vintage goods around the world.

I've always wanted to do something with recycled steel drums. Looks like Sundance bet me to it. Which is okay because Robert Redford is amazing (and really adorable). Love this decorative bowl made from a steel drum with all the words left right on it!

Anthropologie really knows how to style and create products-- including this chandelier made from recycled Encyclopedia pages. I knew those books would come in useful somehow!

Okay, this is how I feel most of the time in my house. Really! Am I the only one who sees the dishes in the sink? This vintage 1950's sign at Rejuvenation should be hanging in my kitchen!

Vintage Fabric on Paper Hill Fabrics on Etsy.  I can see how a vintage textile addiction can be formed. Love it. Hope I can use it in a project very soon :) Etsy, another one of my favorite places to see what people are creating and finding. Really talented artists as well as cool vintage and recycled finds.

Love these storage jars made from recycled glass.  West Elm has some very cool recycled stuff. Just type in recycled or reclaimed in the search box on their site and you see what they have! As soon as I redo my pantry, these babies will be lining the shelves!
